6 Low-Key Banishing Spells To Cleanse Negative Energy

Shani holds a mirror to your soul, so you can…
Banishing spells can be incredibly soothing and effective if you need to get rid of something (or someone) from your life and set yourself free. Maybe it’s an ex, a bully at work, or a limiting mindset keeping you stuck. Whatever it is, cleansing and freedom are likely to have brought you here, and banishing spells can help you with both.
But before we get started, the banishing spells in this post are not of the black magic sort and are not intended to manipulate or harm anyone. They are solely focused on helping the spellcaster remove negative energy from her life in the most peaceful way possible.
What is a banishing spell?
A banishing spell means casting a spell that removes something from your life and future. This can be objects, feelings, behaviors, habits, energetic spaces, and people. Pagans and witches often used banishing spells to clear negative energy or bad spirits.
When you clean your home, you’re essentially doing a type of banishment. When you clear out your closet and donate old clothes, you’re doing a type of banishment. And when you delete your ex’s number from your phone and replace every thought of them with something else, you’re doing a type of banishment.
Banishing spells can be little or large, depending on how significant the thing you want to rid yourself of is. Larger spells require more energy and focus.
Are you ready to do a banishment spell?
When doing any kind of ritual or spellwork, the most important thing is your intention.
So if you’re indecisive and unsure whether you want to banish the thing in question, a banishing spell is unlikely to work.
You’ve got to be clear about what you want to banish and why. If you are struggling to decide whether to banish something or not, take it as a no. At least a no for now.
A brilliant alternative to a banishing spell is to do a general protective spell or make a protection spell jar.
Common tools used in banishing spells
Herbs: Before doing any spellwork, it’s a good idea to cleanse your space by burning some herbs. Sage, palo santo, and lavender all work well.
Black candles: These are the go-to candles when doing any kind of banishing, protection, or letting go magic. Make sure you use a new one.
Essential oils: Juniper berry, lavender, and cedar wood are perfect for banishing rituals because they help cleanse, protect and promote peace.
Crystals: Black ones like Tourmaline, Onyx, and Obsidian are perfect for protection and banishment spells.
Cord: Something representing an energetic cord, such as a piece of string, wool, wire, or rope.
How to do banishing magic
Banishing spells can be done in many ways, such as smoke cleansing, crystals, candles, spell jars, bathing, burning paper, meditation, prayer, chanting, making poppets, and more.
Magic is a very personal thing, so remember to use your intuition when creating your own banishing spell. Use the spells in this post as a guide, but don’t feel the need to rigidly follow them.
Remember that a banishing spell can last a different length of time depending on what it is you’re banishing. Some banishings will be permanent, others will need to be regularly refreshed, and others will reduce the frequency or intensity of the thing you’re trying to get rid of but not completely eliminate it where it’s unavoidable (for example, social media trolls).
And while it is possible to remove toxic people from your life with banishment, it’s not possible to rid yourself of the emotions and trauma tied to those toxic people. That’s shadow work that you’ve got to do, and no amount of magic can help you skip past that.
A word of caution: if you are being abused, harassed, or bullied, do not solely rely on a banishing spell to protect yourself. Please seek help from loved ones you trust, teachers, women’s organizations and charities, or the police.
6 Banishing spells (to get rid of something or someone!)
1. Speak it banishing spell
Tools you will need:
- Herbs to cleanse your space
- A black candle
How to do it:
This is the simplest banishing spell on this list and one of the most effective.
Start cleansing your space and yourself by burning some herbs and lighting your candle.
All you need to do is be clear on what you want to banish (and why) and firmly tell the unwanted spirit that it is time for it to leave.
“This is not your place; it is time for you to go.”
“It is time for you to move on so we can both be at peace.”
Visualize whatever it is you want to banish, leaving. Visualize how you will feel when it’s gone, and soak up this feeling.
Leave the candle to naturally blow out (if safe to do so).
2. Let it go banishing spell
Tools you will need:
- Herbs to cleanse your space
- A white candle
- A piece of paper
- A fireproof bowl
- Matches or a lighter
- A pen
How to do it:
This banishment spell focuses on removing something or someone from your space or life (without hurting anyone). So whether it’s a negative, limiting belief or a toxic ex, this is the spell for you.
Open the windows and doors in your house. Light your herbs and walk around your space, wafting the smoke into all the nooks and crannies. Focus on your intention as you do this.
When you’re done, take your pen and paper and sit somewhere quietly. Write the thing or person you wish to banish on the paper.
Next, set alight to your paper, and burn it over your fireproof bowl. Channel all your energy into how you’ll feel once this thing has gone from your life.
Go outside and scatter your ashes or bury them. You might want to take a short walk afterward.
When you return home, immediately take a shower or cleansing bath to wash away any stagnant bad energy. Afterward, light a white candle and focus your thoughts on love, light, kindness, joy, and peace.
3. Balloon banishing spell
Tools you will need:
- Herbs to cleanse your space
- A balloon
- A source of helium (to fill the balloon)
- A piece of paper
- A pen
How to do it:
Set your intention, then burn your herbs and start to cleanse your space of any negative energy.
Write whatever you want to banish on your piece of paper, then fold it up and pop it into the balloon.
Blow the balloon up with helium, and when you’re ready, go outside and let it go.
As it flies away into the sky, visualize this weight releasing from you.
4. Cord banishing spell
Tools you will need:
- Herbs to cleanse your space
- A stick or wooden spoon (about six inches long)
- A piece of cord (about 24 inches long)
- A piece of paper
- A pen
- A black candle
- Your favorite black protection crystal
How to do it:
Gather all your tools and place your crystal on a table or altar cloth in front of you. Open your windows and doors, burn some herbs and cleanse your space.
Sit as if you’re meditating so you can bring your intention into focus. Feel the emotions attached to your intention. Think about how amazing you’ll feel once this emotion, person, or object has been banished from your life.
Light your candle and continue to hold these emotions. Feel them fueling the flame.
Write the thing you wish to banish on your paper. Wrap this piece of paper around your stick.
Next, slowly wrap your cord around the paper and stick as tightly as possible.
As you do this, visualize this dark energy leaving you. You might also want to command it to leave you alone.
When you reach the end of the cord, tuck it into itself so it’s secure and won’t unravel.
Now, relax. Feel this weight leave your body. Feel every muscle in your body relax.
Leave your candle somewhere safe to burn out.
Close your circle however you wish to.
Leave your stick somewhere you can find it.
5. Waning or dark moon banishing spell
Tools you will need:
- Herbs to cleanse your space
- A black candle
How to do it:
You might want to combine a banishing spell with an upcoming moon ritual. The best moon phases to work with banishing spells are the waning moon and the dark moon. These are times for letting go of whatever is no longer serving you so you can move into the new lunar cycle feeling lighter, ready to set new intentions, and manifest your deepest desires.
Cleanse your space however you wish to, using whatever herbs you feel called to use.
Light your candle, and sit quietly in a peaceful place where you won’t be disturbed. You may want to meditate for a few minutes, focus on your breath, or even say a prayer.
Next, visualize yourself surrounded by a bright, white, shining light. Imagine this light gradually swallowing up any darkness you can see or feel until everything radiates this white light.
You might want to say something like, “negativity and shadows, be gone,” or “I banish the darkness and drink in the light.” As you do, imagine a door being shut on the negative energy.
And so it is.
6. Protection spell
Tools you will need:
- Herbs to cleanse your space
- A black candle
- A black crystal
How to do it:
If you decide against a banishing spell, a protection spell might be what you’re looking for.
Find a comfortable place to sit cross-legged on the floor, with your crystal in your hand or in front of you. Light the candle, and close your eyes.
Relax, breathe, and bring feelings of safety, warmth, comfort, and peace to mind. You might want to conjure a particular memory that makes you feel this way, or just imagine how it would feel to feel so protected and safe.
Next, bring awareness to your solar plexus chakra (around your belly button). Visualize a ball of yellow light here. Imagine this light getting bigger and brighter until it completely envelopes you in a big sphere of bright, yellow light. This is your shield. Feel it.
Even as you come back to the room and to your physical body, know that this circle of protection is always around you, keeping you safe from negative energy and harm.
Don’t overdo it with banishing spells!
Ridding bad feelings and people from our lives can feel incredibly freeing and make us think we’re moving forward in terms of spiritual growth.
However, some people get a little carried away and start cutting cords with everyone they meet. The danger is that you won’t just be eliminating negative connections and energy but also positive energy and loving connections with people who care about you. It won’t be long before you find yourself completely alone, without any ties to anyone, and with a loss of compassion for others.
Move with caution here. Banishing spells should only be used when you’re 100% certain something needs to go. They shouldn’t be used in place of doing shadow work to deal with our wounds and trauma or in place of those difficult conversations with people that are uncomfortable but essential in any healthy relationship.
So remember to clarify what you want to banish and why before you start. When you’re honest with yourself, you can then confidently decide to move forward with your choice to banish, you can make peace with things as they are, or you could even choose to channel your energy into shifting or repairing whatever needs work.
