7 Simple New Moon Tarot Spreads For Divine Wisdom

how to do a new moon tarot spread

Working with oracle cards and tarot decks has been a revelation for me. It has deepened my spiritual practice and connection to my inner wisdom. In this post, I’m going to show you how to do a simple tarot spread on the new moon, so you can gain clarity and guidance on where to channel your energy this cycle and what to let go of so you can move forward with intention and manifest your deepest heart desires.

What does a new moon symbolize?

If you’re new to working with the lunar cycle, the new moon and full moon are the two most prominent anchor points, occurring roughly every two weeks.

A new moon symbolizes a new cycle, a blank slate, a fresh start. The energy available to us at this time is quiet, inward, and reflective. It might help you to think of the different moon phases as seasons. The new moon is the season of winter. In contrast, the full moon is the season of summer.

During the new moon, our intuition is heightened, so it’s the perfect time to reflect on where you’ve been over the past moon and be intentional about where you wish to go and grow.

When we pause and reflect like this, we gain clarity and focus on what truly matters to us. When the time is right, we can take conscious action in the physical world that supports our intentions and dreams and helps us manifest them.

How to do a new moon tarot spread

Here’s how to prepare for a new moon oracle or tarot spread.

Cleanse your space

Before doing any kind of ritual, spellwork, or magic, it’s a good idea to cleanse your space (and yourself) of unwanted energy. Give the room a quick tidy and clean, and then you can move on to cleanse the energy.

You can do this by:

  • Burning herbs
  • Clapping your hands
  • Diffusing some essential oils
  • Visualizing a purified circle around you

Select your deck

The next step for your new moon tarot spread is to choose your deck!

If you only have one set of oracle or tarot cards, don’t worry; this is enough! And if you have plenty to choose from, let your intuition guide you to pick the one you need today.

If you have an altar cloth, you can lay this out on the floor or a table and place your deck on top.

Find some stillness

Find a cozy spot to sit on a chair or cushion, and settle in. Close your eyes, get quiet and take some deep breaths. You can meditate for a short while if this helps you ground into the here and now.

Place a hand over your heart to connect to this space and the moon’s energy. And take a few minutes to connect to the energy of your chosen deck.

Shuffle your cards

Make sure all your cards face the same way so you don’t get a sneak peek of any images! It’s best to shuffle your cards before you do a new reading. There are many ways to do this. You don’t need to shuffle like you’re a blackjack dealer! Do what’s comfortable for you.

As you shuffle your deck, think about what you’re grateful for and your intentions for this new moon cycle.

Now you’re ready to do a new moon tarot spread.

With all the tarot spreads below, draw all your cards and place them face down in front of you in the arrangement shown in the images. Once you’ve finished drawing your cards, you can turn them one by one.

After your new moon tarot spread

Connect to your inner guide

If you’ve been working with tarot cards for a long time, you might know the meanings of your cards by heart. But if you don’t, as you look at the cards you’ve drawn, think about what they are trying to tell you.

What is your intuition saying? How do you feel? Does anything spring to mind?

You can read up the meanings in your guidebook afterward but trust your intuition here too.

Journal

Create space to journal after your new moon tarot spread. You might want to journal on each card you drew, how it makes you feel, and the actions you want to take going forwards that are in alignment with you and your heart’s desires.

Declare your new moon intentions

Because the new moon symbolizes a new beginning, it’s a wonderful time to set new intentions and carry these with you through this lunar cycle and beyond.

Use the divine guidance that came to you in your tarot reading to declare your intentions. Where do you want to focus your attention, time, and money this month? What is in your highest good?

Write your intentions down, then take some time to visualize each one coming true.

How do you feel? What can you see? What are you doing? Who are you with? How has your world changed?
