The Liminal Space Between Where You Were And Wish To Grow
I’m a multi-passionate Life and Career Coach with a practical…
Lately, a common theme has been emerging—both in my own life and in conversations with others. It’s that uncomfortable, uncertain space between where you are and where you want to be. The void. The liminal space. That frustrating in-between where you’ve set your sights on a goal, done “the work,” stayed open, tried to be patient… and yet, nothing seems to be landing.
It reminds me of a plane circling the airport in a holding pattern. You know the destination. You’ve done everything right to get there. But for some reason, you’re not being cleared for landing. You’re just… hovering. Looking down at the runway that isn’t quite ready.
I’ve spent more time in this place than I’d like to admit. It’s disorienting. I’ve caught myself over-analysing, questioning whether I misread the signs, whether I’ve missed something, or whether I should scrap the whole thing and pivot entirely. Doubt creeps in quietly, even when, deep down, my dream still feels aligned.
And I’ve watched others go through the same. Some give up, thinking it wasn’t meant to be. Others push harder, trying to force clarity or movement. But I’ve started to wonder if this space isn’t a mistake or a punishment… but a necessary part of the process.
This is where the idea of divine timing helps me breathe a little easier.
Divine timing, to me, is the understanding that things unfold not always when we want them to, but when they’re meant to. It’s the sense that life has its own rhythm and that timing is part of the wisdom. It doesn’t mean being passive or giving up. It means trusting that what is right for us will arrive when we’re truly ready to receive it.
Because sometimes, the delay is protection.
Sometimes, it’s preparation.
Sometimes, the universe is busy aligning pieces you can’t yet see.
And sometimes, you’re being invited to deepen your trust.
Not the passive kind of trust that means doing nothing, but the active kind that asks you to keep showing up even without guarantees. To keep moving forward with presence, even in uncertainty.
I’ve been living this firsthand in my own career. After years of following the “shoulds,” working in a role that made sense but didn’t quite feel right, I decided to make a career transition. I’m in the process of building a career that feels aligned with my life, and there have definitely been moments of uncertainty along the way.
The transition hasn’t been fast or easy. There are still quiet days, moments of doubt, and times when I question if it’s all coming together. But I can also see how this in-between space has been shaping me. It’s teaching me patience. It’s helping me clarify what I truly want to build. It’s nudging me to slow down and deepen my trust in what I can’t yet see.
Recently, I’ve been reading Do Less by Kate Northrup. One of the things she recommends is leaving space for the universe in your weekly planning. I love this idea. Because how often do we try to fill every gap, hold every outcome, carry the whole thing on our own?
What if we don’t have to?
What if we can choose to offer some of it up, the fear, the pressure, the need to figure it all out, and let life hold it for a while?
So if you’re in a holding pattern too, here’s what I’ve been practising (and maybe it’ll help you as well):
- Hold the vision but loosen the grip
- Focus on what feels real and manageable today
- Rest when you need to
- Experience the joy—not just in the outcome, but in the process
- And ask yourself: what can I let the universe hold for me this week?
The runway will clear when the timing is right. And when it does, I truly believe you’ll understand why it couldn’t have happened any sooner.
Until then, maybe we’re not lost or behind.
We may be exactly where we’re meant to be. For now.
