How To Do An Egg Cleanse Ritual And Banish Bad Vibes

egg cleanse ritual

I’m big into spirituality, holistic medicine, and weaving in more ritual and sacred moments into my life, so when I came across this thing called an egg cleanse ritual, I was intrigued.

Over the past couple of years, the egg cleanse trend has blown up on TikTok and the world wide web. An egg cleanse ritual is even performed in the new Chilling Adventures of Sabrina by her aunts, Hilda and Zelda.

So, in this article, I’ll explain what exactly an egg cleanse ritual is, where it originates from, the benefits of doing one, and how to perform your own egg cleanse at home (for yourself, family members, or friends).

What is an egg cleanse ritual?

egg cleanse ritual origin

An egg cleanse ritual involves taking a raw, uncracked egg and rolling it down your body in circular movements to soak up bad energy from your body.

Afterward, you crack the egg into a glass of water and read it in the way that you might read tea leaves.

What you see (and maybe smell) can indicate what’s going on physically, mentally, or energetically with you today and help you resolve it.

What are the key benefits of doing an egg cleanse?

An egg cleanse ritual can help to alleviate our suffering and heal our minds, bodies, and souls through clearing and cleansing.

It can help to heal and eliminate:

  • Energetic blockages in your chakras
  • Bad luck
  • Imbalances
  • Addictions
  • Fears and phobias
  • Negative energy and negative spirits
  • Toxic energy
  • Confusion
  • Bad karma
  • Physical and mental health problems
  • Stress and anxiety

Not only can it help cleanse your aura and body, but it can also help clear your home.

Everything is energy

Every day, we unknowingly collect different energies, the same way that objects do. This happens 24/7 from the places we go, the people we interact with, and the situations we find ourselves in. Some of these energies are positive, while others are not so good.

You’ll already be aware of this process. For example, when you spend a day at work with a certain person and you come home feeling anxious, drained, and closed. You’ve collected negative energy. The opposite is when you spend an evening with a group of people, and you walk away feeling inspired, uplifted, and like you can be and achieve anything. Here, you’ve collected positive energy. Both of these scenarios are the result of the energy we’ve been exposed to and the effect it has had within. This is why it matters so much where we go and who we surround ourselves with each day.

Any time you feel out of balance and need to restore your energy and find harmony, you can do an egg cleanse. Not only will this help clear away negative energy, but it will also make space for new opportunities and good fortune to come in. You’ll be left feeling calmer and lighter.

There is no bad time to perform an egg cleanse ritual. Egg cleanses are good all year round. However, it’s common to do one if you’ve had a string of bad luck, you’ve become ill, you’re about to embark on a big new project, you’ve just gone through a breakup, or you’ve made a conscious choice to distance yourself from certain people (friends or even family).

Note: Although an egg cleanse ritual can work wonders for you, it shouldn’t be used as a replacement for visiting a doctor if you’re unwell.

Why eggs?

ostara hare

Eggs are commonly associated with Easter, but in ancient times before Easter, there was Ostara, named after the Goddess Eostre/Ostara. What we know today as the Easter bunny began as a hare because the hare is a sacred animal to the Goddess and also a symbol for the moon. And a hare can conceive while already pregnant, which is how the hare and eggs came to symbolize life, fertility, and abundance. Because eggs are a symbol of life, they can take on energy, which is what they do in an egg cleanse ritual.

It is also believed that eggs are energetically polarized, which means they can draw negative energy and toxins out of the body. This is why some people say that the egg becomes noticeably heavier during certain rituals because it’s filled with energy. Sometimes, the weight of that can be so great that the egg explodes from the pressure.

Where does the egg cleanse ritual come from?

It’s believed that egg cleansing is an ancient, spiritual healing practice that originated in Mexico and Mesoamerica, but there are traditions of a similar nature in Italian and Filipino culture. The ritual is known as “Limpia” in Spanish, which translates to “spiritual cleansing.”

Beware of scammers

Before I show you how to do your own egg cleanse ritual at home, I want to talk about the “Great Egg Trick.”

What is it?

Roaming travelers often do phony egg readings for people to trick them into handing over money. They’ll inject an egg with whatever they want beforehand (blood, insects, bile, metal, etc.) and then tell the client this represents a terrible curse in their life. They’ll claim they can remove this curse in exchange for money. Or, they’ll pretend to cast a spell on the money to remove the curse, then pretend to destroy the money, but it’ll always somehow end up in their pocket.

So beware of scams like this if you ever get an egg cleanse or psychic reading from anyone.

How to perform your own egg cleanse ritual at home

Gather your tools:

  • 1 egg (at room temperature)
  • Copal, frankincense, garden sage, or palo santo (to burn)
  • A white candle
  • A small white cloth
  • A small bowl of salted, lemony water
  • A glass of water
  • Salt

You can either arrange your tools on your altar, on a white cloth, or on any clean, sturdy surface. Make sure you have everything you need before you get started so you can perform your ritual without interruptions. You don’t want to break your focus or flow or energy!

Other tips:

  • An egg cleanse ritual is best performed at the start of something (the beginning of the week, month, witch’s year) or when the moon is waning.
  • It can be done at any time of day.
  • Make sure the room you’re using has a window so that negative energy can leave.
  • Do your egg cleanse alone unless you’re performing it on someone else.

1. Place your items on your altar

Arrange all your items on your sacred altar or white cloth so that you’re ready to perform your ritual. Ground into the present moment—be here, now.

2. Cleanse your space

Before performing any kind of ritual, it’s important to cleanse your space so that no stagnant energy interferes with the magic and potential of your intentions.

The egg cleanse ritual usually involves burning copal. If you can’t find copal, frankincense is a good substitution. And if garden sage or palo santo are all you have (typically used for cleansing before many rituals), these will do just fine.

Make sure your windows are open, light your incense, then walk around the room, making sure you reach all the corners and crevices.

You can even pass the egg through the smoke.

3. Wash the egg

The first step of any egg cleanse ritual is to wash your egg. Give it a gentle, light rinse in your bowl of salted lemon water. When you’re done, remove it from the water and place it on a cloth.

4. Connect to the Universe

Next, light your candle and connect to the Universe, Source, Spirit, or Goddess (whatever your preferred name is). Ask the Universe to help you use this egg as a vessel to clear yourself of any negative energy that may be stuck. Pass your egg over the candle flame a few times while you do this.

5. Set your intention for this egg cleanse

cleansing prayer

During any ritual, whether it’s a full moon ritual or a summer solstice ritual, take time to set an intention. What do you want to achieve from this ritual? Why are you doing it?

Hold the egg in your hands and bring it to your heart as you think of your intention. Once you’ve got it, repeat it out loud. You might even want to speak directly to the egg.

Here are some examples of intentions you can swipe:

  • “Through this cleanse, I release all the stagnant, stuck energy within.”
  • “After this ritual, I will be cleansed of negative energy and ready to welcome in something better.”
  • “With this egg cleanse, my luck will change.”

6. Roll the egg over your body

Now it’s egg action time!

Either standing up or lying down, slowly move the egg all the way down your body, starting at your head and ending at your feet. Do this in small, anti-clockwise circular motions, the same way you would if you were doing a lovely sugar scrub all over your body.

Trust your intuition here. If you feel called to stay in a particular area of your body for a bit longer, do that.

Remember to get every part of your body—your eyelids, the back of your neck, your ears, your ankles, and the soles of your feet.

Keep going until you feel like you’re done.

7. Crack your egg into a glass of water

Now it’s time to crack your egg into the glass of water. Let it settle for 5-10 minutes before trying to analyze it. You can sit quietly and meditate for this time if you like, or simply sit in stillness.

Then, looking at the glass side-on (not from above), look at the egg and what’s happening in the water. Notice any bubbles, strands, color changes, images, and anything else that seems unusual or stands out to you.

8. Egg cleanse meanings

Here are some common things you might see and what they may symbolize for you.

Clear water

If you notice no unusual shapes, smells, or anything else and the water is clear, this suggests that if there was some stagnant energy or conflict within you, it has been cleansed. There’s no need to do another cleanse anytime soon.

Cloudy water

Cloudy water that doesn’t smell and doesn’t have any blood in it may symbolize a loss of energy through a hole in your aura. You may be experiencing nightmares, severe fear, anxiety, or even PTSD. You could also be experiencing a string of bad luck.

Sinking yolk

If the yolk has sunk to the bottom of the glass, this symbolizes that some heavy stuff has been cleansed from you.

Floating yolk

A floating yolk suggests there’s still an unresolved issue, and it’s recommended that you do another egg cleanse ritual sometime soon.

Halo

This may indicate that you are moving too quickly when making decisions. This is your call to slow down.

Flowers

Negative energy is slowly dissipating, and better times are coming your way.

A person

You have an enemy, or there is a specific person in your life who is the cause of much of your negative energy.

Bubbles

Tiny bubbles could mean that negative energy has been absorbed into the egg (a good thing), but it could also mean that maybe you’ve been more tired or irritated recently due to stress.

Big bubbles symbolize a cage—is there a situation you feel trapped in right now?

Cobwebs

There may be someone in your life who is jealous of you, or you may feel entangled in a sticky situation that is bringing you negativity and confusion.

Strings

Maybe a current or past co-dependent relationship has been trying to sap your energy.

Pointy needles or nails

There may be a dark curse that was put on you, either in this lifetime or a past one.

A bad smell or blood in the egg

You may be ill or about to experience some kind of physical or mental illness. Any blood or changes in color could also suggest that a curse has been placed on you.

9. Dispose of the egg

spiritual egg cleansing

And that’s your egg cleanse ritual almost complete. The final step is to dispose of the egg. Whatever you do, do not eat the egg! I know it might seem like a waste of a good egg, but it’s all mixed up in water now anyway. Plus, all the negative vibes that you cleansed from your body are in that egg, so it’s really a bad egg now. If you eat it, you’ll just be flooding your system with that toxicity again.

A lot of people will suggest flushing the egg down the toilet, but the best way to get rid of it is to simply wash it down the kitchen sink and bury the eggshell in the earth so it can be composted.

10. Repeat the egg cleanse ritual if needed

If your first egg cleanse suggests some unresolved issues or negativity, it’s a great idea to repeat the ritual soon.

Have you ever done an egg cleanse?

I realize that this ritual might seem a little wacky, especially if you’ve never heard of it before. But it’s very similar to reading tea leaves or visiting a fortune teller or healer. The most important thing with any kind of ritual or magick is believing in what you’re doing. So if you believe an egg cleanse can help clear you of some toxic energy or disturbance, that’s all that matters. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. And that belief makes the crucial difference between your intentions manifesting or not.

Have you ever done an egg cleansing ritual before, or will you give this a go? I’d love to hear about your experiences in the comments below!

  • Is burning the herbs to help cleanse the space a necessity to the ritual I have none of the herbs you recommend nor do I have a candle I have some store brand heart and throat incense

    • Hi Sidney!

Burning herbs is a brilliant way to cleanse any space (or yourself) of bad vibes. Alternatively, lighting a candle or using a diffuser or a diffuser spray can work too. Candles and herbs are pretty inexpensive to purchase – you really don’t need to break the bank. You could even forage for some herbs or flowers like lavender. Check out this post for more inspo and detail.

      I hope that helps!
