If you’re a witch who loves symbols, sacred geometry, and numerology, sigils might be a beautiful addition to your rituals and spellwork. In this post, I’ll explain what a sigil is and how to make a sigil for protection, abundance, and manifestation.
What is a sigil?
Sigils might sound very occult and potentially sinister because, in the past, they were sometimes used to conjure spirits. But today, a sigil is typically a personal, unique symbol infused with a magical meaning used to manifest our deepest desires.
Whether you want to attract a romantic relationship, a dream job, better health, or more financial abundance, a sigil can help you.
To make a sigil, you write your intention, create a unique set of letters from it, then turn it into an encoded symbol that only you will understand and feel connected to. I’ll go into more detail on how to make a sigil later in this post.
What is sigil magic?
Simply put, sigil magic is the practice of creating a sigil, charging it with a personal intention, and using it to change your reality. You can think of a sigil as the first step to manifesting your dreams and desires. This symbol will bypass the rational mind and take root in and speak to the realm of your subconscious, where possibilities are infinite.
But the key with all rituals, spellwork, and magic is to combine your spiritual/emotional intentions and desires with aligned action in the physical world. You can’t manifest something just by wishing it true; you must move toward it in your mind, body, and soul.
The benefits of making one
Making a sigil can help you:
- Delve deeper into your spiritual self
- Dip your toes into witch work
- Release your grip/cling on your desires and let the Universe do its thing
- Become aware of how everything in life is connected
- Clarify your intentions (what you truly want as opposed to what you think you want)
- Take your place as a conscious co-creator of your destiny
- Feel more empowered
- Increase your motivation
- Take considered action toward your dreams
- Let go of what doesn’t matter and focus on what does
- Manifest your deepest desires
How to make a sigil
Now you know what a sigil is, here’s how to make one, whether it’s for protection, abundance, or connection.
1. Set up your space
2. Choose the type of sigil
- A destructible sigil: activated by being destroyed, e.g., through burning a piece of paper, carving it into a piece of food, then eating it.
- A temporary sigil: eventually disappears over time, e.g., a temporary tattoo or pen mark on your skin, carved into a candle and then melted.
- A permanent sigil: lasts for a significant period, e.g., a piece of art or pottery that you place in your home, a permanent tattoo, or a piece of paper placed under a piece of furniture.
Choose your type of sigil based on your intentions and the kind of ritual you want to do.
3. Set an intention
Before you make a sigil, it’s super important that you set a clear intention for it. So think about why you’re creating it and what you want to manifest.
A vague intention would be “more love” or “less struggle.” These aren’t specific enough. At the same time, you don’t want to be too specific that you over-complicate it.
Focus on the qualities you desire, and make sure you focus on one thing. If you want to manifest lots of things, create a new sigil for each of those things.
“I desire female friendship and connection with women who inspire and support me.”
“I am ready to find my dream job.”
“I wish for a happy, healthy relationship that aligns with the future I am building.”
if you’re creating a sigil for protection, it might be something like, “I am protected from negative energy around me.”
Keep your intention positive and in the present tense where possible.
Remember that there is always real work involved in manifesting our desires. If you don’t plan on doing the required work, or it’s unrealistic to achieve what you want right now, then break down your desire until it feels slightly out of reach but possible.
4. Write out your sigil
Once you’ve got your intention, write it down on a piece of paper.
The next step is to cross out all vowels, then go through again and cross out any repeated consonant (non-vowel) letters.
You should now have a very reduced string of letters.
5. Create a symbol
From here, you can start to play with your unique string of letters and arrange them into a beautiful symbol. Rearrange them as much as you want.
Take your time. Play with different variations and choose a symbol that resonates with and speaks to you.
You just made a sigil!
6. Charge your sigil
The type of sigil you choose to make will affect how you charge it. For example, if you’re making a destructible sigil, burning, burying, or tearing it up will be the charge.
You can also charge a sigil by meditating, chanting, visualizing, clapping, or dancing. Trust your intuition and choose the charging method that best fits your sigil and intention. Keep your intention at the forefront of your heart and mind while you charge it.
Now all that’s left to do is to close your ritual and keep track of your results in a journal or in a note on your phone.
Ready to make a sigil and manifest your intention?
Sigils are another meaningful and empowering ritual to have in your spiritual toolkit and a powerful way to channel your energy toward what you desire most while also declaring it to the Universe.
